Control Resources

Control Resources is the process of ensuring that the physical resources assigned and allocated to the project are available as planned, and monitoring planned versus actual utilization to take corrective action as necessary.

Explanation

Control Resources is concerned with physical resources such as equipment, materials, facilities, and infrastructure — not team resources. It ensures that resources are available when needed, are being used efficiently, and that any surplus resources are released when no longer required.\n\nThis process uses data analysis (including alternatives analysis, cost-benefit analysis, performance reviews, and trend analysis), problem solving, interpersonal and team skills, and the project management information system. It monitors resource expenditures and consumption against the plan to identify variances and take corrective action.\n\nKey outputs include work performance information, change requests, and updates to the project management plan and project documents. This process is part of the Monitoring and Controlling process group and is performed throughout the project.

Key Points

  • Focuses on physical resources, not team resources
  • Part of the Monitoring and Controlling process group
  • Compares planned vs. actual resource utilization
  • Ensures surplus resources are released when no longer needed

Exam Tip

Control Resources applies to physical resources only. Team performance issues are handled through Manage Team, not Control Resources.
