Solution Evaluation

Solution evaluation is the process of assessing whether a delivered solution meets the business requirements, achieves the expected benefits, and delivers the value that justified the project.

Share:

Explanation

Solution evaluation occurs after the solution (or a portion of it) has been delivered and is operational. Its purpose is to determine whether the solution actually solves the business problem or capitalizes on the opportunity identified during needs assessment. This closes the loop in the business analysis lifecycle by comparing actual outcomes against expected outcomes.

The evaluation process includes validating that the solution meets acceptance criteria, measuring key performance indicators (KPIs) against the targets defined in the business case, gathering feedback from users and stakeholders, and identifying any gaps or deficiencies. If the solution falls short, the business analyst recommends corrective actions, which may include enhancements, process changes, or additional training.

Solution evaluation also considers whether the original business need has changed since the project began. Market conditions, regulatory requirements, or organizational priorities may have shifted, affecting whether the solution is still relevant. In agile environments, solution evaluation is continuous through sprint reviews and stakeholder feedback. In predictive environments, it typically occurs during or after project closure.

Key Points

  • Assesses whether the delivered solution meets business requirements and achieves expected benefits
  • Compares actual outcomes against KPIs and targets from the business case
  • May result in recommendations for enhancements, process changes, or additional training
  • In agile, evaluation is continuous; in predictive, it occurs during or after closure

Exam Tip

Solution evaluation asks "did we solve the problem?" It is not just testing (does it work) but value assessment (does it deliver the expected business benefits).

Burndown Chart

A Burndown Chart is a graphical representation of work remaining versus time in a Sprint or release, showing whether the team is on track to complete the planned work.

Resource Leveling

Resource leveling is a resource optimization technique in which adjustments are made to the project schedule to keep resource usage at or below a defined limit, often resulting in a longer project duration.

Risk Register

The risk register is a project document that records the details of individual project risks, including their identification, analysis results, response plans, and current status.

Stakeholder Mapping

Stakeholder mapping is the visual representation of stakeholder relationships, influence, interest, or other attributes using grids, matrices, or diagrams to support analysis and engagement planning.

Relative Estimation

Relative Estimation is an agile technique where work items are sized in comparison to each other rather than in absolute units like hours or days, providing faster and more accurate estimates.

Cost Performance Index (CPI)

Cost Performance Index (CPI) is an EVM efficiency metric that measures cost performance as the ratio of earned value to actual cost: CPI = EV / AC.

Schedule Performance Index (SPI)

Schedule Performance Index (SPI) is an EVM efficiency metric that measures schedule performance as the ratio of earned value to planned value: SPI = EV / PV.

Earned Value Management (EVM)

Earned Value Management (EVM) is a methodology that integrates scope, schedule, and cost data to assess project performance and progress objectively.

Power/Influence Grid

The power/influence grid is a stakeholder classification model that groups stakeholders based on their level of authority (power) and their active involvement or ability to affect the project (influence).
