Observation (job shadowing) reveals how users actually work — including workarounds, unofficial processes, and tacit knowledge that users can't verbalize. It's especially valuable when existing processes are poorly documented or when users struggle to describe their own workflows.

**Why not A:** Brainstorming is a group creativity technique for generating ideas, not for observing users in their work environment. While brainstorming can help identify potential requirements, it relies on participant discussion rather than direct observation of actual work practices.

**Why not B:** Surveys collect structured data through questionnaires distributed to stakeholders, not through in-person observation. Surveys capture what users report about their work, which may differ significantly from what they actually do, making them less effective at revealing tacit knowledge and workarounds.

**Why not C:** Prototyping involves creating preliminary versions of a solution for stakeholder feedback, not observing current work processes. Prototyping is a design validation technique, whereas job shadowing is a discovery technique for understanding existing workflows and user behaviors.
