CAPM Practice: Demonstrate an understanding of business analysis (BA) roles and responsibilities

BA and PM are complementary roles. The PM manages project delivery — schedule, budget, risks, stakeholder engagement. The BA manages requirements — elicitation, analysis, documentation, and validation. Both collaborate closely for project success.

**Why not A:** The BA and PM roles are distinct and complementary, not identical. The business analyst focuses on eliciting, analyzing, and managing requirements and ensuring solutions meet business needs. The project manager focuses on planning, executing, and controlling the project to deliver on time, on budget, and within scope. While one person may occasionally fill both roles in smaller organizations, the roles themselves are fundamentally different.

**Why not B:** The BA does not formally report to the PM in a standard organizational structure. While BAs and PMs collaborate closely and the PM may coordinate the BA's activities within a project context, the BA typically reports to a functional manager or BA practice lead. The relationship is one of partnership, not hierarchical subordination.

**Why not C:** The PM does not report to the BA. Project managers have their own reporting structure, typically to a program manager, PMO director, or executive sponsor. Suggesting that a PM reports to the BA misrepresents the organizational dynamics. The two roles operate as peers who collaborate to ensure project success from their respective areas of expertise.
