Our Honest Take

These certifications serve completely different career stages. CompTIA Project+ is an entry-level certification that validates foundational project management knowledge — ideal for people starting their PM career or IT professionals who manage small projects as part of a broader role. PMP is the senior-level gold standard that requires years of experience and opens doors to leadership positions. Project+ will never substitute for PMP on a senior job posting, but PMP is overkill if you just need to demonstrate basic PM competency.

What We Recommend

If you have less than 2 years of project experience and want a quick credential, get CompTIA Project+. If you have 3+ years of PM experience and want to advance your career significantly, go straight for PMP — it is worth the extra effort. Do not get Project+ if you already qualify for PMP; it will not add meaningful value to your resume at that point.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CompTIA Project+ worth it if I plan to get PMP later?

+

Only if you need a credential now and do not yet qualify for PMP. Project+ can validate your PM knowledge for current job applications while you accumulate the 3-5 years of experience PMP requires. However, once you have PMP, Project+ adds no additional value to your resume.

Is CompTIA Project+ easier than PMP?

+

Much easier. Project+ is 95 questions covering foundational concepts with no experience requirement. PMP is 180 scenario-based questions requiring years of real project management experience to understand. Most candidates can prepare for Project+ in 2-4 weeks vs 2-4 months for PMP.

Do employers prefer PMP or Project+?

+

PMP by a wide margin. In job postings for project managers, PMP appears 10-20 times more frequently than Project+. Project+ is more commonly seen in IT support and junior coordinator roles. If a posting says "PMP preferred," Project+ will not satisfy that requirement.

Can Project+ help me get PMP?

+

Not directly — Project+ does not count toward PMP prerequisites. However, the knowledge you gain studying for Project+ (scope, schedule, cost, risk basics) forms a foundation for PMP study. The study time is not wasted, but the credential itself does not shortcut the PMP path.
